IT was 27 years ago this past week when a group of caring, campaigning, crusaders and Echo readers retired, triumphant, in the wake of shared victory against authority. The then Government had come down on the side of masses of campaigners from south east Essex who had fought to stop the much-admired breast cancer unit at Southend Hospital from being closed and the service transferred to Harold Wood.
